events - How can we deliver the ‘Big Society’ Sustainably?

22 September 2010, 9:30 - 15:00 Pitt Building in Cambridge

[Trumpington Street between King's College Chapel and the Fitzwilliam Museum]

The Government‟s plan to promote a 'Big Society' is an important initiative; inspirational local leadership and community action are essential if we are to live sustainably within environmental limits.

We have the chance for the state, business and people to work together to make public services more efficient, and equip communities better to sustain prosperity for generations to come. However, there are issues to address, for example:

  • How do we ensure that decisions meet sustainable development objectives?
  • How do we ensure that “eco-systems services” on which health and life depend are
    adequately protected?
  • How do we make sure that everyone – regardless of background or circumstance – gets a
fair chance to participate or benefit?

This free event will help address issues and identify opportunities to take forward the 'Big
Society' in the East of England. The results of the discussion will help inform a shared 'manifesto' to help decision makers implement the concept in a way that contributes to sustainable development.

The event is aimed at local authority leaders and officers, public servants, social enterprises,
community leaders, businesses and business representatives.
